Strava Thefts – How to Protect Yourself

There’s been a lot in the news recently about “Strava Thefts” and various articles have been published that talk about the relation to how thieves are using Strava, Garmin Connect, and a lot of other fitness tracking apps for that matter, to track where people live and therefore target them and steal bikes.

It’s nothing new, and sadly it’s not surprising – but there are a few simple things you can do to help yourself not be one of those targets. First and foremost is keep your bike and kit locked up in a safe place, chained to fence post in the garden isn’t secure by the way …

Ok, so on to the tips. The first thing you want to do is make sure you’re not sharing your profile, or personal information with just any one who views your profile.

To do this, go to your account settings and change the following setting to “On”:

This does exactly what you can see, keeps your details private for only your approved followers can see.

The second, and probably the most useful feature is to set a “Hidden Location” or “Privacy Zone” – this allows you, if you wanted, to leave the first setting to “Off” and still keep privacy of hiding your actual home address and/or work addresses.

I strongly recommend adding these features to your account, it’ll be worth it in the long run!
